I seem to notice this popular habit among many Japanese singers, especially young females. Easy examples are Koeda and chelly of supercell/EGOIST. They hide their faces in the shadow or even go as far as using a fictional character as their persona to hide their identity. Aimer also did this years ago, though now she's out in the open.
Why do you think she did that?

Could be that being shy/low self esteem got in the way when they all first started out. And as time went by and her popularity expanded, Aimer was more confident and decided to come out. It's the same for writers, they will go under a pen name at times when they are uncertain how their writing will take off. It's probably more complicated for singers to do that since they have to go up and perform live.
(There was something else I was gonna say but when I was typing that I forgot so I may edit this post late. >.<)
I've been watching a few of her live performances and she is very pretty. I don't normally like those big glasses, but she makes them super cute.

I think a large amount of artists tend to hide their profiles or personal information because they wish to be judged only via their works. It also prevents people from being judgemental due to other things. With Japanese singers, though, this seems to happen often. Say, for example, supercell, EGOIST, ClariS, and some more I bet. I agree that I used to think that the big glasses are weird. I got used to it because she wears it a lot, especially in live performances.

I've been noticing a lot of them doing that lately too. What if... they are all the same person! That would be crazy, but extremely unlikely. Yea, I've gotten use to them as well. I think only certain people can pull them off as good as that.

I've heard that in several cases, such as ClariS, the members are actually still very young, so they did that to protect the identities. Watching Aimer in her big glass makes me want to try to get one too.

It's always fun to try different style of glasses!

I've been up close to a few of her concerts, first time I her her live I was curious about her voice, so I attended the Shibuya Tower records release free live for "Chouchou Musubi" (蝶々結び) When the live event started it was rather dark and I was rather confused at firsl, later when I noticed the lights didn't show her face I assume maybe she doesn't want to reveal her identify for whatever reason. Which I am perfectly fine with. For this year's Rock in Japan 2017, I managed to get right in front of the stage for her performance, I had to slowly sneak up after 3 other bands before she was on stage hehe... she was last live at that stage for the day, we tried to get an encore but it didn't happen, a shame. I did notice aimer does close her eyes and really concentrate when hitting those high notes, so my thought this time was maybe it doesn't look so photogenic when its filmed for tv use, hence performing in silhouette/dim light you would not notice. Also maybe she just wants to sell you her music rather than her looks etc. As for the glasses many fans do wear it as well Since she had won the award on Music Station and later other music events, it was inevitable that she was doing to reveal her face, unless she was going to wear a mask or something it just wasn't going to happen. Also she has never publicly revealed, her background, commonly released by other artists etc. Aimer has not reveal real name, her age, school, etc. Her father is a musician. During the live events she does wave and look directly at the audience etc. except you will never get a shot of her. At the Rock in Japan festival, the photographer was really struggling, I noticed he was taking lots and lots of photos, I was thinking why was he struggling, later when I saw the release of the photos, all of them were silhouette type shots. *That's* why it too so long to take Aimer's photo! haha. Even the wowow broadcast of Rock in Japan you do not see a clear frontal shot of her on stage. ^_^

wildthing LOL, I can only imagine how hard the photographers have to work to just get a glimpse of her face. She has come out in public events e.g. the award thing, but I noticed that she didn't really change her stage performance style in terms of visibility. I don't mind such approach at all. I saw her in Anisong Festival in Singapore before Kalafina and what a contrast. With Aimer, we really just focused on her voice, while Kalafina was exploding with moves and interactions. Both of them managed to reach the audience, so I'm good with whatever they are comfortable with. I agree that it has a lot to do with privacy. It must be exhausting having to go around in secret, hiding your face etc. I hope she can still enjoy a relatively simple daily life.

Actually the issue at Rock in Japan was that it was lit rather well, so the photographer had to find angles where it was dark enough not to see her clearly haha tough job ^_^;
